BAKED PORK CHOPS
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Pork Chops
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Pat the pork chops dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture.
- In a small bowl, combine garlic powder, smoked paprika, thyme, onion powder, cayenne pepper (if using), salt, and black pepper. Rub this seasoning mixture evenly over both sides of the pork chops.
- (Optional) If using a marinade, mix soy sauce, honey, olive oil, minced garlic, and Dijon mustard in a bowl. Place the pork chops in a resealable plastic bag or shallow dish and pour the marinade over them. Marinate in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes or up to 8 hours.
Step 2: Sear the Pork Chops (Optional but Recommended)
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add 1 tablespoon of olive oil.
- Sear the pork chops for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown. This step locks in the juices and adds a flavorful crust.
- Transfer the seared pork chops to a baking dish.
Step 3: Bake the Pork Chops
- Place the pork chops in the preheated oven.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes, depending on the thickness of the chops. Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature:
- 145°F (63°C) for a slightly pink and juicy center (recommended by the USDA).
- 160°F (71°C) for fully cooked chops.
- Once done, remove the pork chops from the oven and tent with aluminum foil. Let them rest for 5 minutes to redistribute the juices.
Step 4: Make the Pan Sauce (Optional)
- While the pork chops rest, place the skillet used for searing over medium heat.
- Add chicken broth and scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan.
- Stir in heavy cream, Dijon mustard, and butter. Simmer for 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.
- Serve the sauce drizzled over the pork chops.
Serving Suggestions
- Side Dishes: Pair with mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, steamed green beans, or a fresh garden salad.
- Grains: Serve over rice, quinoa, or buttered noodles.
- Bread: Add crusty bread to soak up the delicious pan sauce.
Tips for Perfect Baked Pork Chops
- Choose the Right Cut: Bone-in chops tend to stay juicier, while boneless chops cook faster.
- Room Temperature: Let the pork chops sit at room temperature for 15-20 minutes before cooking to ensure even cooking.
- Avoid Overcooking: Use a meat thermometer to prevent dry pork chops.
- Resting Time: Allow the pork chops to rest after baking to lock in the juices.
- Searing for Flavor: A quick sear before baking adds depth and a delightful crust.
