Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Meat Mixture
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. If your ground beef is very lean, add a tablespoon of olive oil.
- Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it up with a wooden spoon or spatula as it cooks.
- When the meat begins to brown (about 5 minutes), add the chopped onion, bell pepper, and garlic. Sauté until the vegetables are soft and the meat is fully cooked, about 7-8 minutes.
- Drain any excess grease from the skillet to avoid a greasy filling.
Step 2: Make the Sauce
- Lower the heat to medium and add the ketchup, tomato paste, water or broth, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, Dijon mustard, smoked paprika, chili powder (if using), and black pepper.
- Stir the mixture thoroughly to ensure the flavors are well blended.
- Simmer the sauce with the meat and vegetables for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mixture thickens to your desired consistency.
Step 3: Toast the Buns (Optional)
- For a flavorful touch, butter the cut sides of the hamburger buns and toast them in a skillet or on a griddle until golden brown.
- Remove from heat and set aside.
Step 4: Assemble the Sloppy Joes
- Spoon a generous portion of the meat mixture onto the bottom half of each bun.
- Add your choice of toppings, such as pickle slices, coleslaw, or shredded cheese.
- Place the top half of the bun over the filling and serve immediately.
