Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Meat Mixture

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. If your ground beef is very lean, add a tablespoon of olive oil.
  2. Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it up with a wooden spoon or spatula as it cooks.
  3. When the meat begins to brown (about 5 minutes), add the chopped onion, bell pepper, and garlic. Sauté until the vegetables are soft and the meat is fully cooked, about 7-8 minutes.
  4. Drain any excess grease from the skillet to avoid a greasy filling.

Step 2: Make the Sauce

  1. Lower the heat to medium and add the ketchup, tomato paste, water or broth, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, Dijon mustard, smoked paprika, chili powder (if using), and black pepper.
  2. Stir the mixture thoroughly to ensure the flavors are well blended.
  3. Simmer the sauce with the meat and vegetables for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mixture thickens to your desired consistency.

Step 3: Toast the Buns (Optional)

  1. For a flavorful touch, butter the cut sides of the hamburger buns and toast them in a skillet or on a griddle until golden brown.
  2. Remove from heat and set aside.

Step 4: Assemble the Sloppy Joes

  1. Spoon a generous portion of the meat mixture onto the bottom half of each bun.
  2. Add your choice of toppings, such as pickle slices, coleslaw, or shredded cheese.
  3. Place the top half of the bun over the filling and serve immediately.
