Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the Oven

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray or butter.

Step 2: Cook the Ground Beef Mixture

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned and no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes.
  2. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic. Sauté for another 3-4 minutes, until the onions are translucent and fragrant.
  3. Stir in the salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, and dried thyme. If using, add beef broth and let simmer for 2-3 minutes to enhance the flavor.
  4. Remove the skillet from heat and set aside.

Step 3: Prepare the Potatoes

  1. Peel and thinly slice the potatoes, ensuring uniform thickness for even cooking.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the milk, heavy cream, flour, and mustard powder (if using). Set aside.

Step 4: Assemble the Casserole

  1. Spread a thin layer of the meat mixture evenly across the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  2. Layer half of the sliced potatoes over the meat mixture, slightly overlapping the slices.
  3. Pour half of the milk and cream mixture over the potatoes.
  4. Sprinkle 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese over the layer.
  5. Repeat the layering process with the remaining meat mixture, potatoes, milk mixture, and another cup of cheddar cheese.
  6. Finish with a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese on top.

Step 5: Bake the Casserole

  1. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes.
  2. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
  3. Let the casserole rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Serving Suggestions

  • Sides: Serve with a simple green salad or steamed vegetables for a balanced meal.
  • Bread: Pair with dinner rolls or garlic bread to soak up the savory juices.
  • Sauces: Offer ketchup, sour cream, or hot sauce on the side for extra flavor.

Tips for Success

  1. Even Slicing: Use a mandoline slicer for perfectly uniform potato slices, ensuring they cook evenly.
  2. Pre-Cook Potatoes: For faster baking, parboil the potato slices for 5 minutes before assembling the casserole.
  3. Cheese Choices: Experiment with different cheeses, such as Gruyère, Monterey Jack, or mozzarella, to suit your taste.
  4. Resting Time: Allow the casserole to rest after baking to set the layers and make slicing easier.
  5. Add Vegetables: Incorporate frozen or fresh vegetables like spinach, bell peppers, or mushrooms for added nutrition and flavor.
