Equipment Needed

  • Large skillet
  • Saucepan
  • Mixing bowls
  • Potato masher or ricer
  • Wooden spoon or spatula

Step-by-Step Recipe

1. Prepare the Salisbury Steak Patties

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
  2. Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape them into oval patties, about 1/2 inch thick.
  3. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side, until browned. Remove from the skillet and set aside (they will finish cooking in the gravy).

2. Make the Mushroom Gravy

  1. In the same skillet, add butter and olive oil over medium heat.
  2. Sauté the mushrooms and onions until softened and lightly browned, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Add garlic and cook for another minute.
  4. Sprinkle flour over the mushroom mixture and stir well to coat.
  5. Gradually add beef broth, whisking constantly to avoid lumps.
  6. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, and heavy cream (if using). Simmer for 5-7 minutes until the gravy thickens.
  7. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  8. Return the Salisbury steak patties to the skillet, spooning gravy over them. Cover and simmer on low heat for 10 minutes, until the patties are cooked through.

3. Prepare the Mashed Potatoes

  1. Boil the cubed potatoes in a large pot of salted water until fork-tender, about 15-20 minutes.
  2. Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot.
  3. Add butter, milk, and sour cream (if using). Mash until smooth and creamy, adding more milk if needed to achieve the desired consistency.
  4. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
